Realistic Expectations

After four long years without a trophy we head into the new seaon as percieved also rans. The media are expecting to finish fourth at best, but with Man City snapping up players left right and centre, that is hardly garunteed. Will another seaon of scrapping for fourth place be accpeted by an increasingly fickle Arsenal crowd? Midway through last season with Aston Villa snapping at our heals an undercurrent of discontent was evident at the home of football. If the problems of the past season are not addressed this summer we could be in for a particularly long and painful season

My question is where do you believe the mighty Gunners will finish next year with he current squad?

  1. Well done for doing this.

As an eternal optimist, if we get a good defensive midfielder in (Melo, Cana or better), I reckon we could do well this year. A fit Eduardo would be massive, as would a whole season of Arshavin. If any two of Cesc, RvP and Ade do better than their fairly tame performances last year, our attack could be excellent. A stable defence (Vermaelen, Gallas, Clichy, Sagna, shielded by Melo) and we're away.

United looking weaker ever day at the moment, the Chavs might not be able to hold onto Terry and Liverpool ditto re Alonso and Mascherano.

Or we could see lots of departures in the next few weeks and no purchase of Melo/Cana, and all our rivals buying lots of quality to scare us.....

  2. Thanks for your comment. I agree with everything you've said.
Personally i think we're not too far away. A defensive midfielder is a must though as you touched upon. If we can bring in someone who can add a bit of steel and urgency alongside Cesc and if Vermaelen fulfills his undoubted potential we could make a push next year.
